Plumbing Emergency in Melbourne? Here’s What To Do to Stay Safe & Minimize Damage

Plumbing emergencies never happen at a good time. Whether it's a burst pipe in Werribee at 2AM or a blocked drain in Tarneit during Sunday lunch, it always seems to catch you off guard. As a plumber working across Melbourne’s west — including Melton, Caroline Springs, Taylors Lakes and more — I know first-hand how bad things can get if you don’t act quickly.

This guide is just some friendly advice from me to you, so you know exactly what to do when things go sideways with your plumbing.

1. Find the Problem

Look around and figure out what’s going on. Is water coming out of a wall? Is a toilet overflowing? Is the hot water system leaking?

Whatever it is, the sooner you know where the problem’s coming from, the better you can respond — and the more info you’ll have when you call a plumber like me.

2. Shut Off Your Water

If it’s leaking or overflowing, you need to stop the water.

Go find your water meter — usually out the front, in a box near the footpath, or in your laundry or garage. Turn the tap or valve **clockwise** until it stops. That shuts off all water coming into the house. Every second counts here, especially if it’s flooding inside.

3. Turn Off Gas or Power (If Needed)

If water is running near power points or the hot water system is gas, shut those off too.

- For gas, turn the valve handle so it’s across the pipe — that means it’s off.
- For electricity, go to your switchboard and turn off the main power or affected circuits.

⚠️ Don’t muck around with this if there’s water near live wires — call a professional straight away.

4. Try to Contain the Damage

While you're waiting for help:
- Move furniture or stuff that can be damaged by water
- Don’t use any damaged taps, toilets or appliances
- Use buckets or towels to control smaller leaks

If it’s safe to do so, take some photos of the mess for insurance.

5. Call a Local Emergency Plumber

If you're in Werribee, Melton, Tarneit, or anywhere across Melbourne’s west — I can be there fast.

**Call Fox Plumbing & Drainage on 0405 900 418** and let me know:
- What the issue is (e.g., burst pipe, blocked drain)
- What you've shut off (water, gas, etc.)
- How urgent the situation is

The more info you give me, the quicker I can help you out.

6. Take Photos for Insurance

Snap a few pictures of the damage, especially anything major like soaked flooring, busted walls, or appliances that copped it. It helps big time when you go to claim later. Also keep receipts for any plumbing or cleanup work.

Wrap-Up

Being ready for a plumbing emergency can save you thousands in damage — and a whole lot of stress.

Just remember:
- Find the problem fast
- Shut off what you can
- Call a local plumber (me!)
- Stay safe and don’t take risks

You don’t have to deal with it alone — that’s what I’m here for.
